FICO 10T Trended Scoring Is Now Live: How 24 Months of Credit Behavior Decides Your Loan Approval

The Catalyst

As of May 2026, the traditional "snapshot" credit score—a single-day look at your balances—has officially been superseded by "Trended Data" underwriting. Major lenders have completed their transition to the FICO 10T and VantageScore 4.0 models this month, following the FHFA’s mandate for modernized credit reporting.

For the first time, your borrowing capacity is no longer determined by where your balances sit today, but by the direction they’ve moved over the last 24 months. Simultaneously, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) accounts have fully integrated into these scores. For "bad credit" borrowers, this means a single missed $50 installment on a retail purchase now carries the same weight as a missed credit card payment, potentially tanking approval odds for larger personal loans overnight.

The Hard Numbers

  • Approval Expansion: VantageScore estimates that the inclusion of rent, utility, and telecom data in the 4.0 model has made 5 million additional borrowers mortgage-eligible this month who previously lacked a score.
  • The "Trend" Penalty: Under FICO 10T, borrowers who have "revolving stress" (consistently rising balances over 24 months) are seeing score drops of 20–40 points compared to the old FICO 8 model, even if they have never missed a payment.
  • Current Rate Climate: Despite the scoring shift, average rates for bad credit personal loans (scores below 580) remain steep, currently hovering between 32.1% and 35.9%. However, 3-year fixed rates for fair-credit tiers saw a slight reprieve this week, dropping 0.37 percentage points to an average of 13.08%.

What it Means for Borrowers

If you are applying for a loan with a sub-600 score this month, the "quick fix" is gone. Lenders are now looking at your Debt Velocity. If you’ve been aggressively paying down balances for six months, the new models will reward that "downward trend" with higher borrowing limits, even if your total utilization is still high.

Conversely, the "BNPL Trap" is the biggest threat to your capacity right now. Because these small loans are now reported as revolving or installment credit, having three or four active BNPL plans suggests "credit hunger" to the new algorithms. To maximize your approval chances today: close out all BNPL balances immediately and ensure your credit card balances are lower than they were 30 days ago. In the 2026 lending environment, the trajectory of your debt is now more important than the debt itself.
